Matcha on Your Cafe Menu: How to Position It for Maximum Sales
Adding matcha to your menu is one thing. Positioning it to actually sell — consistently, at a strong price point, to the widest possible customer base — is a different skill entirely.
The cafes that see the best matcha revenue don't just list it. They present it in a way that makes ordering feel natural and obvious. Here's how to do that.
Give It a Prime Position
Menu placement drives orders more than most cafe owners realize. If your matcha drinks are buried at the bottom of a long beverage list, most customers will never see them. The drinks that sell are the drinks customers see first.
Give your signature matcha drink — ideally your ceremonial matcha latte — a prominent position near the top of your drinks menu. On a chalkboard, this means eye level. On a printed menu, this means the upper left or upper right position, where eyes naturally go first.
If you have a display counter, put a beautiful iced matcha in it. Nothing sells a drink like seeing it.
Name It Well
Generic names underperform. "Matcha Latte" is fine, but "Ceremonial Matcha Latte" or "SEN Matcha Latte" — using your supplier's name as a quality signal — tells customers they're getting something specific and premium, not just a generic green drink.
Some cafes go further and create an entirely original name for their signature matcha drink. If that fits your brand, it works even better — it becomes something customers identify with your specific cafe.
Use Descriptive Language
Menu descriptions should do two things: help customers understand what they're getting, and make them want it. For matcha, the most effective descriptors focus on experience rather than ingredients.
Compare these two descriptions: "Matcha, milk, optional sweetener" versus "Ceremonial grade matcha from Uji, Japan — smooth, naturally sweet, with a clean energy lift." The second one sells.
You don't need to be elaborate. Two to three words that capture the experience — smooth, vibrant, earthy, clean — are enough to make the drink feel considered and worth ordering.
Photography and Visual Presence
Matcha is one of the most photogenic drinks in a cafe setting. That vivid green against white milk, especially in a clear glass over ice, creates images that perform exceptionally well on Instagram and Google Business profiles.
Invest in one good photo of your iced matcha latte. Use it on your social media, your Google Business listing, and any digital menu boards you have. Customers who discover your cafe through search or social media will see it first — and it will influence their order before they even walk through the door.
Seasonal Specials Drive Trial
Customers who would never order a matcha latte off a regular menu will try a seasonal special. A "Summer Matcha" or a "Sakura Matcha Latte" in spring creates urgency and novelty that drives first-time orders. Many of those customers become regulars on the standard menu once they've tried it.
At SEN, we work with our cafe partners on seasonal menu ideas and can advise on which matcha products work best for specific drink concepts. Talk to our team here to explore the options.
